Ingredients

  • 1 cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons apple juice or bourbon if preferred
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper optional
  • ½ teaspoon liquid smoke
  • 1 teaspoon honey optional

Method

Cooking Instructions
    Combine the Base Ingredients
    1. Add the ketchup, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, apple juice, and Dijon mustard to a medium saucepan. Stir everything together until the sugar begins to dissolve.
    Add the Seasonings
    1. Mix in the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, salt, cayenne pepper, and liquid smoke. Stir well so the spices are evenly combined with the sauce.
    Simmer the Sauce
    1. Place the saucepan over medium-low heat. Let the sauce simmer gently for about 15 minutes. Stir often to prevent sticking and help the flavors blend together.
    Adjust the Flavor
    1. Taste the sauce carefully. Add a little honey if you want more sweetness or extra vinegar if you prefer a tangier barbecue sauce.
    Cool the Sauce
    1. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Allow the sauce to cool for about 15 minutes. It will naturally become thicker as it cools.
    Store and Serve
    1. Pour the cooled sauce into a clean glass jar. Refrigerate until ready to use. Stir before serving for the best consistency
